In the past when temporary power was thought of it immediately conjured up a picture of a rough looking plywood board with a house panel and a few receptacles as well as cables scattered in every direction. Worker safety and product reliability was not high on the list of priorities resulting in a throw away environment to say the least.
It was at times unsafe, definitely ugly and also very rarely inspected with grounding being questionable. But today stringent safety requirements and the ability for directors and managers of companies to be legally liable for worker safety have resulted in a new view taking place of temporary power.
The work place today demands that product meet code as well as safety standards and be used many times over. Therefore temporary power is really not an accurate name for the product as it is actually mobile power used in a variety of challenging scenarios and in our particular case these are:
• New construction, both commercial and industrial based.
• Industrial shutdown and or turnaround projects.
In the case of most new construction a general purpose NEMA 3R product is used in various custom configurations. Often when new construction is done in an industrial plant environment a hazardous rated product is required in various configurations. Products range from main incoming distribution, secondary distribution and sub distribution assemblies that include transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, Arc Flash protective components, GFCI ground fault circuit interrupters and various configurations of receptacles conveniently positioned throughout the work site on the ground or securely mounted to scaffolding providing electrical outlets for various hand tools needed by labourers.
Lighting is also an important part of the construction scenario and includes flood lighting, task lighting as well as emergency lighting and is temporarily mounted using quick secure scaffold brackets, or more permanently with a scaffold mount Safe Swivel Light Pole™ by Safety Lighting Products Ltd.
Everything is inter-connected using designed and tested cord sets assembled with harsh duty cable; each using specific gauges of wire, connectors and plugs as needed to meet the varying demands of the site. Scaffold mount cable management systems are also part of the offering in order to achieve the best level of site safety.
In some remote cases on site power generation can be provided including E-houses thus providing a complete mobile power solution.
Industrial plant shutdowns typically present environments with flammable or potentially flammable properties resulting in the need to provide very safe, rugged power and lighting. This not only must meet the individual site requirements but also needs to be easy to maneuver on site and be user friendly. Today and in times past the standard product offering was heavy, cumbersome, very labour intensive and very expensive.
Shutdowns involve workers on scaffold, in vessels, on catwalks and pipe racks, etc. and in order to provide the best mobile power to these areas we have taken advice from the workers in the field and developed innovative products which incorporate much of today’s leading edge technology. This includes scaffold mounted lighting to hazardous rated LED hand held task fixtures, distribution assemblies manufactured in stainless steel and standard powder coated enclosures, fully tested and certified cables and cord ends as well as sub distribution assemblies for individual workers each with integral ground fault protection at the point of field access for optimal safety.
Our product is manufactured in our fully operational metal fabricating facility in Edmonton and we minimize what we outsource in order to ensure the highest level of Quality Control possible, taking great pride in what bears our Power Industrial logo.
Every week of every year there is a shutdown planned some where in North America and every facility is required by law to provide a safe workplace. Safety reduces operating costs and also downtime related to accidents and lost time incidents. Factory mutual is active with these companies and monitor them closely.
